PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Howdy Aggies,

We are into May and while it may appear it is a slow month there is still plenty going on, both inside the A&M Club as well as around the area.

First off, plenty of Aggie sports, the baseball team, after a rough start against the ‘little piggies’ were able to pull off another series win over the weekend. While it was not always pretty, there are no pictures in the win column. The softball team managed to get a win off the #1 team in the country, the Florida Gators. Congratulations to the team for assisting in sending the seniors out with a win on “SENIOR” Sunday. In track & Field the men’s team did what the men’s team does, as they won the LSU Invitational over the weekend.

With May also comes the end of school, which always has a flurry of activity as well. The Corps of Cadets had their 40th Anniversary of March to the Brazos over the weekend. This has obviously been a long standing Corps tradition which serves two purposes, first and foremost to support the March of Dimes. As of this point the Corps has raised over $3,000,000.00 for this worthy cause. Second, it is the final journey for the seniors as they turn over the reins to the underclassmen. They make the journey out but ride buses back to campus. For those that are interested, the Corps will hold ‘Final Review’ this Saturday, 7 May on campus, as if you need another reason to make the trip over.

Locally, we will kick into full gear planning our annual FISH FRY. Please consider getting involved and assisting with our largest fundraiser as we work to continue supplying scholarships to local high school students headed to A&M. We have a meeting on Tuesday 10 May (details below) and this is open to everyone looking to assist in some way.

SCHOLARSHIP FEEDBACK

Dear WCAMC Scholarship Committee,

I am happy to report your scholarship paid off. My daughter, Casey Curry ’11, was the inaugural recipient of the Pete and Nell Kauffman Scholarship from Liberty Hill in 2008. She went on to complete her Biomedical Science degree from TAMU in 2011 and began Medical School at TAMU in 2012.  Although she followed her Aggie husband to west Texas and will graduate with her Medical Degree from Texas Tech Health Science Center this May, we are still very proud Aggie parents.  We are told Casey is the first person born and raised in Liberty Hill to graduate from medical school.

In addition, Casey is also a new mom to Jameson Barrett, DOB 2/16/16, class of 2038.

Please pass this on to Jim Kauffman and the Scholarship committee as I do not have an email address.

I hope the Liberty Hill HS student selected this year goes on to do great things as well.

SEC KENTUCKY DERBY PARTY

AGGIE MUSTER (is this Thursday)

Abby and her crew have done a great job of getting things lined up but we could still use a hand on the day of. As there is an event at Sun City prior to Muster we will be unable to set-up until 5PM. It is still our goal to open the doors by 5:30 so any additional help before hand would be greatly appreciated.

While it is too late to register for dinner, we will have a limited number of meals available the night of. However, it will be first come first serve. If you are not planning on eating we look forward to you joining us for our speaker at Muster ceremony which will begin at 7PM.

BLUEBONNET WINE TOUR

Have you ever had interest in a wine tour but are not excited about the driving while sampling many of the states fine wines? One of our members is exploring a bus tour through the Bluebonnet Wine trail. Living in central Texas many have explored the wineries in the hill country but have you ever ventured east? This would be an overnight, weekend excursion on a chartered bus. The goal would also be to have dinner at Messina Hof on Saturday evening before settling down for the evening. If this interest you, please feel free to drop us a note so we could begin receiving some feedback as we are in the infancy stages of planning. In addition, if you would like to assist in planning such an excursion or have some experience please let us know. Ideally this would be a May or early June trip is the pieces fall into place.

The date (Sunday 24 April) and location (Shadowglen in Manor) have been set for the Annual SEC Golf Tournament. This is a great event to come out and enjoy, while earning money for scholarships. Each school receives funds based on the number of teams that participate. While registration has closed feel free to come out and join the fun. There are still volunteers needed for some of the on course ‘games’ and it will be a great time. Registration begins at 12 and we will tee off at 1PM

SILVER TAPS SURVEY ASSISTANCE

The University Traditions Council is currently attempting to detail the history of SILVER TAPS since its inception in 1898 honoring late college president Lawrence Sullivan Ross to present day. However, because of its solemn purpose and mystique, very little has been recorded about the history of this event and information is especially scarce from 1920-1950. Brendon Gould, member of the Traditions Council is attempting to interview Former Students who attended AMC during these years in order to collect firsthand accounts of the conduct of Silver Taps, as well as document any major changes or events that may have occurred. They are particularly interested in determining if Silver Taps was played for students who were killed overseas during World War II and Korea. If you are a member of a class during this time frame, please contact Brandon @ brendan.gould1@gmail.com

Spring is upon and there are many activities, both around the county and on campus. This weekend in Aggieland is Parents Weekend. Always a lot of activities to keep you busy and entertained. The Aggie Mom’s Club will gather for their annual fundraiser and you can find some amazing items for your own collection or something you might like to donate for the FISH FRY Silent Auction (hint-hint). In addition on campus the Association of Former Students will have its largest ‘RING DAY’ ever with over 6,000 Aggies receiving their rings. In the event you had not heard the football Spring game will once again be at Kyle Field after a three year absence.

Around the county we will have a Muster meeting, a special screening of an Aggie original movie at City Lights, Reveille Breakfast and our own version of the The BIG Event – WCAMC Edition and that is all this week as we kick off the month of April. Your club and officers continue to work hard to put together a variety of activities, hopefully you will find something that works for you and get connected with the club. SPECIAL Aggie Documentary Screening in Georgetown

Four young Aggie Cowboys hatch an outrageous plot to adopt, train, and ride a string of wild mustangs 3,000 miles from Mexico to Canada through the wildest terrain of the American West. The trip became an epic journey of self-discovery, tested friendships, and iconic landscapes that included runaway horses, a sassy donkey, perilous mountain passes, rodeos, sickness, injury, and death. The Audience Award winner at Telluride Mountainfilm and Hot Docs Film Festival, Unbranded is a soaring tale of danger and resilience, an emotionally charged odyssey that shines a bright light on the complex plight of our country’s wild horses.

Doors will open at 6pm, allowing you to mingle with creator and star Ben Masters and get an up close look at two of his co-stars, a formerly wild mustang and burro.

Showtime is at 7pm, Georgetown City Lights, Thursday 7 April. Immediately following the award winning documentary will be a Q and A with Ben Masters himself and Mustang Heritage Foundation Executive Director, Kali Sublett.

The BIG Event – WCAMC Edition

While we missed the timing to coincide with the annual event on campus, we will again assist the community as the San Gabriel Kiwanis host the Georgetown Special Olympics Track & Field Event. Our club was able to assist two years ago and while it was a little chilly, it was a great event and everyone enjoyed their time spent assisting and cheering these amazing local athletes.

Come join us this Saturday, April 9 from 9am-12pm, volunteers need to arrive at 8:00am at Charles A Forbes Middle School, 1911 NE Inner Loop, Georgetown, TX 78626. They have opportunities for us to time, do awards etc but most importantly cheer and be an encouraging audience. I would like to welcome NATASHA RAJU ’10 back to the area and thank her for joining the club as well as stepping in to fill the role as our new ADVERTISING Committee Chair. Natasha has spent her career in advertising and will be a huge assistance to our club in this capacity. She if filling some time while waiting to attend grad school. She is very energetic and we are very excited to have her assisting us, even if for a limited time.

FISH FRY KICK-OFF MEETING

We had our first meeting to get things started for this years Fish Fry. We are looking for a big turnout and new ways to increase revenue for our scholarship program. There will be an opportunity to sign up and pickup raffle tickets at Muster. Please continue to look for updates in the newsletter for ways to assist and get involved. If you have attended in the past and have the knack for coordinating, we would really like to have a volunteer coordinator. As individuals arrive to assist on the day of the event we would like to have one ‘go to’ person that would direct all of our volunteers.

ANNUAL ‘CARPOOL’ GALA

If you happen to be on College Station looking for a fun event you might want to check out the ‘CARPOOL’ Gala. CARPOOL stands for Caring Aggies R Protecting Over Our Lives and consists of about 250 members who dedicate their weekends to providing free, safe, nonjudgmental and completely confidential rides home to anyone in the Bryan/College Station area. We operate every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 10 pm to 3 am during the fall and spring semesters. Since we started operations in 1999 we have given over 250,000 rides safe rides home. We strive to keep both our fellow Aggies and the entire community safe.

I would like to welcome NATASHA RAJU ’10 back to the area and thank her for joining the club as well as stepping in to fill the role as our new ADVERTISING Committee Chair. Natasha has spent her career in advertising and will be a huge assistance to our club in this capacity. She if filling some time while waiting to attend grad school. She is very energetic and we are very excited to have her assisting us, even if for a limited time.

While we are very excited to have new members involved with the club we still have several positions available if you would like to get involved.

SPECIAL Aggie Documentary Screening in Georgetown

Four young Aggie Cowboys hatch an outrageous plot to adopt, train, and ride a string of wild mustangs 3,000 miles from Mexico to Canada through the wildest terrain of the American West. The trip became an epic journey of self-discovery, tested friendships, and iconic landscapes that included runaway horses, a sassy donkey, perilous mountain passes, rodeos, sickness, injury, and death. The Audience Award winner at Telluride Mountainfilm and Hot Docs Film Festival, Unbranded is a soaring tale of danger and resilience, an emotionally charged odyssey that shines a bright light on the complex plight of our country’s wild horses.

Doors will open at 6pm, allowing you to mingle with creator and star Ben Masters and get an up close look at two of his co-stars, a formerly wild mustang and burro.  Showtime is at 7pm, Georgetown City Lights, Thursday 7 April. Immediately following the award winning documentary will be a Q and A with Ben Masters himself and Mustang Heritage Foundation Executive Director, Kali Sublett.

It is that time of year for high school seniors to begin applying for scholarships. As A&M continues its admittance procedures, keep in mind that our WCAMC scholarship application is now available. We are quickly approaching April which means it will be time for Aggie Muster, one of the most cherished Aggie traditions. See the link below or the tab on our website to register for the event. Our Muster Chair Abby is still looking for assistance with this years Muster, particularly with check-in and assistance with the adult beverage tickets.

FISH FRY KICK-OFF MEETING

We had our first meeting to get things started for this years Fish Fry. We are looking for a big turnout and new ways to increase revenue for our scholarship program. There will be an opportunity to sign up and pickup raffle tickets at Muster. Please continue to look for updates in the newsletter for ways to assist and get involved. If you have attended in the past and have the knack for coordinating, we would really like to have a volunteer coordinator. As individuals arrive to assist on the day of the event we would like to have one ‘go to’ person that would direct all of our volunteers.

ANNUAL ‘CARPOOL’ GALA

If you happen to be on College Station looking for a fun event you might want to check out the ‘CARPOOL’ Gala. CARPOOL stands for Caring Aggies R Protecting Over Our Lives and consists of about 250 members who dedicate their weekends to providing free, safe, nonjudgmental and completely confidential rides home to anyone in the Bryan/College Station area. We operate every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night from 10 pm to 3 am during the fall and spring semesters. Since we started operations in 1999 we have given over 250,000 rides safe rides home. We strive to keep both our fellow Aggies and the entire community safe.

This year’s Gala will be held on April 2, 2016 at the Pebble Creek Country Club in College Station. If anyone is interested in purchasing tickets, please visit www.carpool.tamu.edu/gala

BLUEBONNET WINE TOUR

Have you ever had interest in a wine tour but are not excited about the driving while sampling many of the states fine wines? One of our members is exploring a bus tour through the Bluebonnet Wine trail. www.texasbluebonnetwinetrail.com

Living in central Texas many have explored the wineries in the hill country but have you ever ventured east? This would be an overnight, weekend excursion on a chartered bus. The goal would also be to have dinner at Messina Hof on Saturday evening before settling down for the evening. If this interest you, please feel free to drop us a note so we could begin receiving some feedback as we are in the infancy stages of planning. In addition, if you would like to assist in planning such an excursion or have some experience please let us know. Ideally this would be a May or early June trip is the pieces fall into place.

SILVER TAPS SURVEY ASSISTANCE

The University Traditions Council is currently attempting to detail the history of SILVER TAPS since its inception in 1898 honoring late college president Lawrence Sullivan Ross to present day. However, because of its solemn purpose and mystique, very little has been recorded about the history of this event and information is especially scarce from 1920-1950. Brendon Gould, member of the Traditions Council is attempting to interview Former Students who attended AMC during these years in order to collect firsthand accounts of the conduct of Silver Taps, as well as document any major changes or events that may have occurred. They are particularly interested in determining if Silver Taps was played for students who were killed overseas during World War II and Korea. The date and location have been set for the Annual SEC Golf Tournament. This is a great event to come out and enjoy, while earning money for scholarships. Each school receives funds based on the number of teams that participate. Save the date, Sunday 24 April as we will tee it up at Shadow Glen in Manor with a shotgun start at 1PM. Sponsorship’s are available if you are interested in promoting your business. Registration will be open soon so keep an eye out. Feel free to sign up as a team or an individual and you will be paired with others from the same university.

We work hard to offer a variety of events in hopes that your schedule will allow you to join as often as possible. We realize everyone is busy but it is always good to take a little time for friends and expand your network. We will continue our ‘THURSDAY’ event schedule, but keep your eyes open for a few twist as we move through the year.

This week we will have a special SWEET 16 watch party, stay tuned for various locations. Our regularly scheduled Howdy Hour was pushed a week due to the Easter weekend. We will have our Howdy Hour at Rock Sports Bar in Round Rock next week. Rock Sports Bar is a proud Kyle Field Sponsor for our 2016 Fish Fry. Come out and show your support for a local Aggie establishment. If you know of any locally owned Aggie establishments, please be sure to pass them along as we look to support local, particularly Aggie business’.

PRESIDENTS CORNER

I certainly hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. After a week of much needed rain it was nice to be outside and enjoy the Texas spring weather. Especially if part of your weekend was spent in Aggieland. Both the baseball and softball teams are off to a great start and seem well prepared to begin conference play this weekend. Be sure to tune in tomorrow evening as the Aggies will host the t-sips and attempt to keep their mid-week winning streak alive.

Congratulations to Coach Kennedy and the men’s team for once again taking Kentucky into overtime and just running out of time in the conference tournament. A share of the conference title as well as a positive showing this past weekend, along with a #3 seed in the West Regional should have them very motivated heading into March Madness. Coach Blair and the Lady Aggies will find out where they are headed this evening as they continue into post season play as well.

On a final note, if you have not yet seen it, be on the look out for your club mailer from the Association of Former Students. They started arriving in mailboxes the end of last week and is full of information. We have continued to provide a ‘save the date’ page with important dates that can be placed on your refrigerator or calendar. Muster registration/information along with a Fish Fry sponsor form are also included. In addition, we have included a club membership form along with an envelope to make it very easy to become a new member or simply renew your annual membership in the club. FISH FRY KICK-OFF MEETING

If you are new to the club or new to the area I am sure by now you have heard about our Annual Scholarship Fish Fry Fundraiser. This event is the talk of the county and it is time to begin planning this years event which will be held on Friday June 10th. If you have wanted to get involved with the club but not sure how to get your feet wet, this is a great place to start. We will begin making plans for the annual event and always looking for ways to make it more enjoyable as well as more profitable since we are raising money for Aggie Scholarships! Please come out and join for this initial planning meeting as we would love to have everyone involved.

The RRAAM would like to invite everyone to their annual Anniversary Dinner & Silent Auction on Saturday March 5, 2016 @ 6:30PM, benefiting their student scholarship program.
